Helsinki Design Lab identity by TwoPoints.net
added on Wednesday, Feb 09, 2011 21:53 pm
TwoPoints.net, a small design bureau from Barcelona, show some top-notch graphic and identity works in their portfolio. Their identity for the Helsinki Design Lab especially caught my eye: A system of graphics and symbols, beautiful typography flowing in a square-based grid, and a carefully chosen set of colors. The result is a consistent yet flexible super-modern graphic image. Also have a look at the book design.
Fonts In Use – Type at work in the real world.
added on Wednesday, Jan 05, 2011 22:02 pm
via fontsinuse.comfontsinuse.com is a new site by Sam Berlow, Stephen Coles, and Nick Sherma is an excellent resource for anybody who has an interest in typography. It shows real world examples and adds some explanation and in-depth critique. I would not take the critics‘ part as impeccable, but it is great to read some discourse on type. And the layout and typography of the site itself is worth the visit alone!
Salesman Pete Animated Short
added on Friday, Sep 24, 2010 21:02 pm
My head still spins a bit from this rapid fire of hilarious ideas and wacky details. What a killer short movie, top-notch quality in every aspect, timing, characters, music, everything. Reminds me a bit of Pixar's The Incredibles, but on speed. Go watch, this is better than most animated movies we use to pay money for.
Temp Magazine launched
added on Wednesday, Sep 22, 2010 22:42 pm
Friend and fellow Warrior Peter Riedel has just launched Temp Magazine. He is studying at the Ohm Hochschule Nürnberg (where I also teach) and this is his thesis project. On the website designers, photographers, artists and writers are invited to upload their works on a given topic. All the participants then vote on the submissions and the most popular pieces are transferred into the real world in form of a printed magazine.
I am pretty excited that Peter asked me to supervise this thesis project. The concept is great and the website design that Peter did already sets a rather daring mood. I'm glad I'm involved in the following process. The submission and voting phase will run until Christmas, the printed magazine will be finished in february 2011.
If you would like to send in submissions, I can get you an invite.

bayern design image brochure
added on Friday, Sep 10, 2010 12:56 pm
Here is something from my desk at the Warriors: We did a image brochure for bayern design, an institution that pushes design and innovation in bavarian economy. The layout and design was a collaborative effort of three fellow Warrior graphic designers (Verena Reiber, Nina Pusch and Peter Riedel) and myself. The photographs by Beppo Minx. Maddison Graphic
added on Wednesday, Jul 21, 2010 21:32 pm

The work of Maddison Graphic, a small british design studio, convinced me that type with too much leading can actually look good. Some great pieces, focussed and super-clean, sporting some very sober typography. I especially recommend the “Polyhedron Solar System” screen-printed poster, the stationery of Zoe Williams and of Poly Records. ¬ Comments
It's just a phone
added on Thursday, Jul 01, 2010 23:21 pm

Today there where some rumors again of Steve Jobs answering mails from iPhone users. Be them fake or not, I like Mr Job‘s attitude when he finishes a heated conversation about signal strength with these words:
“retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it.”
These are the most sane words I heard this week. That‘s why I celebrate them with a custom-made iPhone wallpaper: Download here. This puts things in perspective when the next “Oooooh, is this the new iPhone 4?” comes along. It‘s just a phone!
ps.: Of course I made this with a resolution fit for the retina display: 640 × 960 pixels. ¬ Comments
alt/1977 Alternate reality poster series
added on Monday, Jun 21, 2010 19:11 pm
Alex Varanese is not only someone who can create great retro graphics, but also has some weird imagination. He asked himself: What would have happened if the gadgets of today – mp3-players, mobile phones, laptops, etc. – would have been available in the seventies? And how would they have been marketed? The result is a series of 14 wonderful and interesting graphic posters full of warm orange/red tones, cool typography and heaps of clever ideas.
Headline typeface switched again
added on Wednesday, Jun 09, 2010 21:40 pm
I discovered another webfont service, this time from webfonts.fonts.com. Their process and website does not look and feel as good as Typekit‘s, but they have a far better library of fonts. Frutiger, Trade Gothic, Helvetica, everything there. I chose Frutiger Thin for the headlines on this site.
I‘m so glad I have my own site where I can tinker with stuff like that. I hope this is not too annoying for you, dear reader. ¬ Comments
iA on WIRED on iPad
added on Wednesday, Jun 09, 2010 18:49 pm
At informationarchitects.jp there is a very interesting conversation going on about the design of the WIRED magazine in the Apple's iPad. There is a lot to learn about designing for the iPad in general. What makes it even more interesting is not only the critique of Oliver Reichenstein (Information Architects), but the thoughtful reactions of Jonathan Hoefler (H&FJ type foundry) and Khoi Vinh (creative director of New York Times Online).
Headline font now served by Typekit
added on Tuesday, Jun 08, 2010 22:26 pm
I spent some minutes playing with Typekit. I was surprised to see they have all weights of Exljbris’ wonderful Museo Sans, although I am still on the Typekit’s free trial account. Choosing the typeface, setting it up on the Typekit site, adding two lines to the
and BAMM, new headlines. That was fun. ¬ CommentsThe Visual Mixtape posters
added on Thursday, May 20, 2010 23:24 pm
Noa Emberson took 25 of his favourite music albums and made 25 posters out of them. The titles, the lyrics, some layout lines and shapes, plus a big backdrop photography. Nothing special you might say. But Noa‘s feeling for juxtaposition, color palettes and typographic structure let me gasp in awe. So beautiful. My favourite is Iron & Wine‘s Our Endless Numbered Days (above).
Traumgedanken by Maria Fischer
added on Saturday, May 15, 2010 23:30 pm
A lovely illustrated book coming from Maria Fischer, student at FH Augsburg. It's about dreams. The nicely set text is accompanied by abstract illustrations that are done entirely with real colored threads, woven through the paper. These threads seem to run through the whole book, through every single page and also it seems they hold the paper together at the back. Sweet!

Clean & sweet: Kyle Fletcher's site presents some great type works in a nicely layed-out package. Check out the rollover animations of the seemingly usual navigation on the top!
